Trick Candles for the Macintosh from Robert Jen

Trick Candles

(Note: requires Mac OS 9 or Classic or SheepShaver under Mac OS X to run.)

It's your 25th birthday, you've just wished for the winning lottery ticket and the woman/man of your dreams. But as you start to blow out the candles on your birthday cake, you realize that those fun-loving friends of yours have decorated your confections with those sparkling, sputtering, Trick Candles! How will your wishes come true if you can't manage to extinguish all of the flames?

Welcome to Trick Candles. Every time you blow out a candle, you also blow out its 4 immediate neighbors, unless they already happen to be out, in which case they relight! Can you darken the room before the frosting turns into a sea of wax? (Other versions of this game go by the names Lights Out and 5x5.)

The object is to blow out all of the candles on the cake. Clicking on any candle will toggle its state along with the state of its immediate neighbors to the left, right, top, and bottom. For example, if all of the candles are lit, then clicking on the center candle will blow out 5 candles (in a plus sign pattern) and clicking on the lower left candle will blow out 3 candles (in an L pattern).

I'm releasing this game as freeware because it took me only 15 minutes to get the guts of it working. It requires Mac OS 9 or earlier (or Mac OS X 10.4 with Classic or Mac OS X 10.5 and SheepShaver or another emulator) and HyperCard or HyperCard Player (version 2.1 or higher) to run but is a mere 26348 bytes itself.
